Jacopo Cappuccio Embraces Cultural Exchange and Environmental Learning in Indonesia

Enviromental Learning

Bangkalan, Madura — July 5, 2025 — As part of the Jean Monnet Modules 2025 agenda held in Surabaya, Avv. Jacopo Cappuccio not only shared his expertise on European law and sustainability but also immersed himself in a unique cultural experience during his visit to Bangkalan, Madura—a small island just across from Surabaya.

Accompanied by the Vice Chief of the Bangkalan District Police, Jacopo explored some of the region’s most iconic and historic sites. His cultural journey included a visit to Bukit Jaddih, a stunning limestone hill, and a 200-year-old lighthouse built during the Dutch colonial period. He also visited several local religious sites and even participated in the traditional Indonesian art of “membatik” (batik-making), a hands-on experience that left a lasting impression.

“This was a completely new and enriching experience,” Jacopo shared. “I was truly astonished by the richness of Indonesian culture, the warmth of its people, and the natural beauty of Madura.”

This cultural exchange was a planned component of the Jean Monnet Modules, which aim to promote not only academic learning but also international understanding and collaboration. Beyond sightseeing, Jacopo also met with local mangrove farmers to gain insights for his ongoing environmental research.

Deeply inspired by the community’s commitment to ecological sustainability, Jacopo expressed interest in initiating mangrove planting projects back in his home country, with hopes that similar efforts could be expanded throughout Europe. “Mangroves are essential for environmental protection and climate resilience. What I saw here is something worth replicating,” he noted.

His visit reflects the broader goals of the Jean Monnet program — to bridge cultures, foster global networks, and promote sustainable practices across borders.
